Someone at work has bed bugs, should I treat my home as a precaution?

Posted by admin on July 23rd, 2011

I have not seen any bed bugs, but I do have fleas. Should I treat for bed bugs also as I could possibly bring them home? Is it possible to prevent an infestation by treating the home?

I itch everytime I sit in my recliner. Dust mites? What is it?

Posted by admin on February 16th, 2011

It’s only on the recliner. Definitely not fleas. We treated the recliner for dust mites and are still feeling tingling, biting, and itching from the chair. What could it be? Please help. We want to know if we can save the cloth chair or if it belongs in the dumpster. The chair is only 4-5 years old.

Found a small tiny black bug in my bed! Under pillows…help! What is it?

Posted by admin on February 3rd, 2011

When I started changing my bed, I noticed this small black tiny bug. It was crawling around…so it wasn’t dead. I picked it up and killed it of course. I only found one…but I’m just wondering what it is and if there could be more, where to look for them? I have a day bed. I changed my bed now and also sprayed it with Lysol, so I hope that helps! Could the bug have crawled onto me or my dog from outside? My dog sleeps with me all the time. I don’t think my dog has fleas or anything. She hasn’t been scratching or biting. Thanks for any help…I don’t want bed bugs! UGH!

What are these tiny ant-like biting insect in my bed?

Posted by admin on January 21st, 2011

I bought a new mattress about 3 weeks ago and just a few days ago I noticed these tiny ant like (but not ants) bugs with black wings in my bed. I only see them one at a time and they are only on the bed, nowhere else in the house.

They are about a half a centimeter long, very skinny, black, have segments like an ant but the last segment is really long. They also have black wings but I’ve never seen them fly. They’re really fast so I end up just killing them before I can get a picture.

I’ve checked my kids and had my husband check me for any signs of lice, fleas, etc. Nothing. They look nothing at all like fleas, mites, bed bugs or lice.

I live in Texas if that makes any difference. Any idea what these are or how to kill them? I’m chemically sensitive so any advice on debugging a bed naturally?

I’ve already called the mattress store. It’s one of the major chains who claim to be "experts" if you catch my drift. They said it’s too late for them to help. Maybe something laid eggs that are just now hatching?

Would fleas or bed bugs cause tiny blood spots on sheets?

Posted by admin on November 9th, 2010

I just recently found tiny blood spots all over my sheets, I also recently found fleas on my dogs, but I am not sure if fleas can cause blood spots on anything, if not that then I am suspecting bed bugs but have never seen any.

Itching, bites, but no bugs?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2010

My uncle was living with a roommate a few months ago. His roommate brought stuff in the house that was from the garbage. My uncle ended up with an infestation of bedbugs, fleas, earwigs…weather it was from the things brought from the garbage or from neighbors of the apartment building he was in I am not sure. The roommate moved out but bugs were left behind. The management had his unit fumigated twice, other apartments were also fumigated. But the first time did not work, he got fumigated a second time. After the second time my uncle was still complaining he was getting bit, this after him throwing out his bed, couch and lots of other furniture. My uncle was getting real stressed out to the point of break down. He was sleeping on crates because he had no money to buy another bed. I opened my home up to him and he moved in here temporarily with nothing but the clothes on his back. The things he does still have are in storage at a storage facility because I did not want to risk getting any type bugs in my home. We moved my teenage daughter to an upstairs bedroom and let my uncle move into the renovated basement we built this past spring. There were never any bugs there because it was built for my daughter and she never complained.

About 4-5 days after he moved in he started saying he was getting bit. In bed and while sitting on the couch down there. My husband and I were not very happy because we did see the bites, it kind of looked like a mosquito bite. 3 days in the row he would tell us this and we checked his bed, looked for all the signs of bed bugs and didn’t see anything. Looked everywhere turned everything over, box spring and all and did not find a thing. Then we checked the couch and did the same and did not find a thing. But then we were thinking since we didn’t find signs of bedbugs maybe it’s fleas which are much harder to find and smaller. We used bug sprays, vacuumed, tonnes of laundry, it worked for a day or two but then he started saying he was getting bit again. So I looked on google and with my research found something called Food Grade Diatomaceous earth. It is safe for humans and pets but is razor like for bugs, cuts them then dehydrates them. We sprinkled that stuff everywhere downstairs. We used ALLOT of it. Left it there for 4 days then vacuumed. There is still some on his bed and in the carpet just not as much. He is still complaining of bites, and we do see the bites on him. We looked again for signs of bedbugs, still nothing. I am at my witts end. How can you kill a bug if you don’t know what you are trying to kill? My husband and I spend our evenings down in the basement with my uncle and do some catching up with him and enjoy his company once our children are in bed. We never got bit or feel anything. I have asked my children if they have felt bites or anything they all have said no. I have asked my visitors and they have said no. I would think it’s all in his head and he was imagining things because of the bad infestation he had and lived with for months, but that would not make sense because I have seen his bites. One person mention to me that it could be scabies. I am not sure exactly what scabies is and isn’t it catchy? He has lived here almost a month now and we are all fine. My uncle is going out of his mind now and seems like he starting to go into a depression because of all of this.

I have a cat and he has no fleas at all, both my husband and I checked him more than once.

Does anyone have clue on what kind of bugs this can be? Is it my uncle who has bugs or my house? Please help.

Bed Bugs? Should I call for professional help?

Posted by admin on October 21st, 2010

I’m hoping someone who has dealt with bed bugs before can help me.

Recently within the last few weeks I received some bug bites. These occurred immediately after returning from a trip to the east coast (Washington DC). The bites are located only on my feet, ankles, and there are one or two on my calf, and a cluster of three on my upper thigh. No bites on my upper body. At first I thought it was fleas. While we were gone we had a friend come by and feed our cat and he has a small dog. The dog used my couch blanket as a bed so I was thinking that could be it. A friend of mine looked at my bites and said, "You have bed bugs," saying this because he himself had them a few years back and had to throw out his mattress. Immediately I started panicing. My bites are in sort of a linear pattern of three, but they’re spread pretty far apart. My boyfriend who shares the same bed has no bites. But I’ve heard its not uncommon for the bugs to have one host or people not having allergic reactions to their bites. The first thing I did was spray our luggage with bed bug spray and put it in the garage. I haven’t gotten any new bites since the first ones, a few weeks ago.

My boyfriend and I turned our mattress and boxspring upside down and searched for clues but couldn’t find any. I bought vinyl mattress encasements and we’ve sealed up our mattress and boxspring already just in case, our city has a reported high number of bed bug infestations. I’ve been diligently checking the bedding every day and have no other clues (no obvious feces, eggs, or skin) but the other day I did find a blood stain on my pillowcase about the size of a dime. It wasn’t that dark and washed out very easily. I searched the case and pillow but never found a dead bug. I’ve never bled on my pillowcase before, but I have noticed blood in my ear canal within the last week and my boyfriend is prone to nosebleeds from time to time.

So, I’m pretty worried. I’ve already thrown all of my clothing and linens in the dryer on high heat and have been vacuuming like a fool. At first this eased my mind but then I saw that stupid stain. I figured if I saw any more definitive clues (like cast skins or blood stains or an actual bed bug) I would call my landlord. Now that I’ve seen a stain I’m still skeptical of whether or not I have enough information to determine a bed bug problem. Our landlords aren’t the friendliest, we rent from private owners, and their maintenance staff is useless, they don’t know what they’re doing and don’t speak much English. We really don’t have extra money to hire an outside exterminator.

Have you dealt with bed bugs in the past? Would you say I have enough evidence that I should call my landlord or wait for more clues? I have photos of all of my bites, as well as the blood stain. I’ve heard the earlier you catch a problem, the easier they are to get rid of, just not sure if I even have a problem (besides paranoia). Thanks!
Thanks! Yep, I’ve done literally hours of research on the web on bed bugs, so I’ve been searching and keeping a sharp eye out for clues where they like to hide, I even took apart my wooden dresser and sprayed the cracks just in case :) I didn’t stay in a hotel, I stayed with my boyfriend’s parents in the basement room (kind of regretting that now) on a sofa bed. I figure if I picked them up during travel it was at the airport. Thanks for the tip on the new clothing, I never would’ve thought to do that and it makes sense. At this rate it seems like within the next ten years everyone will have bed bugs!

Do bed bugs feed on people who are on blood-thinning medications like Wafarin?

Posted by admin on September 22nd, 2010

I’ve been on Wafarin since 2006–due to a blood-clotting disorder called Factor Five Leiden.

Since I’ve been on the drug, skeeters avoid me like the plague, and fleas hate me with a passion–since biting me means certain death.

But with the bed bug infestation on the rise, I’ve been wondering if the same can be said of these nasty critters?

Do they also bite people who are on blood-thinners? Or do they avoid them as well?

I have just bought a second hand bed, I want to get rid of bed bugs/fleas?

Posted by admin on September 18th, 2010

I wondered if anyone knows of a spray I can use that would get rid of them, if there are any in the mattress I bought. Is it likely fleas can get into the mattress? I am worried as its my 8 year old daughter that has to sleep in it and I dont want her to get bitten. I want to get rid of them before she sleeps in it. We dont have any pets so is it impossible for them to survive in our house anyway?

How worried should I be about bed bugs in a hotel?

Posted by admin on August 27th, 2010

Next week we are going to be staying at extended stay hotel in Mpls because we will be on vacation for more than a week. My question is with all the things I have heard about bed bugs being a growing problem, how worried should I actually be? Never thought about it before I saw it on the news and I know how hard it was to get rid of fleas when I didn’t realize my cat that I had brought them home. How can you tell if a hotel has them?

If it's black, can it be a bed bug?

Posted by admin on July 29th, 2010

I’ve read that bed bugs are white or tan/brown/dark red in color..

Anyway I just got back from NYC and heard about bed bugs but didn’t bring any spray because I wasn’t staying at a hotel or anything. I don’t know if I’ve been bitten by a bed bug or not, but anyway, I found this bug crawling on me during the next day, probably from the floor where I was laying. It’s completely black and a tiny little thing that was crawling around my carpet. around as thick as a penny and about twice as long as that.

Anyway, I don’t think bed bugs can be black, but could that be what it is? I’m just probably over-worrying myself cause I didn’t bring a spray with me.
When I say the thickness of a penny ‘m talking about on its side, like the bug is only a couple millimeters long not big like a roach.

On that note it could be a tick or a flew because it’s that size but it’s black not red or brown. I don’t know what ticks or fleas look like.

I have small bugs in my bed…and need to know what they are.?

Posted by admin on July 22nd, 2010

They are NOT bed bugs or fleas (I know what those look like). These bugs are about the size of or slightly smaller than the printed letter…i They can jump and apparently do not bite as I have no bites. I have washed everything in hot water and vacuumed everything thoroughly. At any given time, I can find 3-5 crawling around on the sheets. Any ideas???
they are not lice or crabs…wrong shape

How can u tell the difference between flea bites, mosquito bites or bed bugs?

Posted by admin on May 14th, 2010

I feel like I’m getting bitten around my ankles lately and I don’t have any pets so don’t think it’s fleas. And I can usually tell a mosquito bit cuz it starts out swollen and turns into a raised bump. These are tiny little bumps that itch. Any ideas besides "cooties"?

I think I have the bed bugs? How is it possible?

Posted by admin on April 10th, 2010

For the past 3 or 4 weeks I have woken up with these mysterious bites that keep appearing every morning when I wake up. I thought they were mosquito bites that came from my bus stop every morning. So I just ignored it for a couple of days, but more and more came in. My cats also had the fleas at the time, but when my mom analyzed the bites, they were too big to be flea bites. Every morning I woke up, I would get more and more bites by the minute. That’s when I started wearing bug spray. I sprayed some on my body before I went to school, but the next morning more bites came in. I was shocked. Most of the bites appeared to be on my feet and ankles. My mom said if it’s not the fleas, they are bed bugs. I learned that bed bugs usually come in when you’re dirty. I don’t see how that’s possible because I take showers every day, and if I eat in my room, I’d pick up the food. So, I bombed my room twice, vacuumed my room and my mattress from head to toe, washed my sheets, and used bug spray, and absolutely nothing helped whatsoever. I even tried making my own bed out of clean pillows, sheets and a sleeping bag, and I lasted without bugs for only 2 days. After 2 days, they fed on me even in my clean pillows and sheets. How many tries does it take to kill these little bastards? Would changing the sheets work?

I am so sick and tired of waking up every morning with new bites! What do I do to kill them? Thank you.
My room is clean, I cleaned it like 5 times already!

bed bugs or fleas? people with experience please help?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010

ok i am constantly being bitten by bugs in my apartment. I see them crawling on my bed and at first i thought they were bed bugs. I got mad because my mattress was bought new and is only 2 years old and i thought i would have to throw it away. Then someone told me they could possible be fleas from the other residents who have pets. I have ALOT of residents with pets. They told me you rarely ever see bed bugs you just get bites and see evident like bed bug poop on your bed. Yes, i have seen dark marks on the outside of my mattress but these things come out in bright daylight and they don’t really take the courtesy to hide. They just come and get me! I have seen them in the corners of my room dead cuz i sprayed a little bug spray the other night. i have even seen a few in the living room coming to get me! I was on the couch and yes two of them were under me , i turned on the light and saw them , turned my head for two secs to get some thing to kill em’ and they were gone. they mostly concentrate in the room either on the carpet or bed ( mostly bed). When i first noticed them i got bites all over my body while in bed. I broke out in hives and a first i thought i had some terrible disease and consulted a nurse who also thought they were hives. my whole arms were covered in bruise like bites ( large) and very very itchy. All my legs and just about everywhere. I have seen the bugs that did this too me and they are brown, flat, and about 1/4 of an inch in thickness. I can’t even sleep peacefully anywhere in the apartment wit these blood thirsty monsters around. What are they, and when will the leave my bedroom so i can enjoy my new bed???? How can i KILL these suckers??

Do bug bombs…(Help help help?)?

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010

…really work?

Hey everyone.

Unfortunately, I’ve got a bed bug problem. The weird thing? They’re not hiding in my mattress. My guess is they’re hiding behind a loose molding in my room. Pathetically, I tried RAID. Of all things. Raid. Stupid ol’ raid. Thats right. It didn’t work. Now, all of my bedding is going in the washer/dryer, so that’s been taken care of. I know they can be INSIDE the mattress as well, because I don’t want to take any chances, I am going to get an encasement for my mattress very, very soon. But because the raid did not work, I want to try a bug bomb first, before I call the exterminator; if needed. Do bug bombs work? how do I use it? are there any other alternative ways on getting rid of bed bugs, before I call the exterminator? And I hear there is a type of lotion that kills bed bugs, what you do is put it on your body like a regular moistrizer, and if the bedbugs try to bite you, it will die from the moistrizer. Is it true? Also, how much would it be to call an exterminator? Thanks so much for the help!
Mark, I think you have fleas.

what are these very small fast jumping bugs?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2010

I just moved into a new apt about a week ago. I’ve been sitting in bed recently and find these tiny bugs that jump. They are very fast and almost impossible to get ahold of to kill. I know they are not bed bugs and I don’t think they are fleas because I don’t have pets nor have I been around any. Also, the apt just got brand new carpet and all of my furniture is brand new. What could this be?

i am being bitten in bed by invisible bugs?

Posted by admin on December 7th, 2009

they are not bed bugs and i have sprayed everything — matress, wood planks under mattress with raid and other formulas but nothing works and nothing is visible except the welts on my skin. i have a dog but he is always treated for fleas.
they are not bed bugs because you can see bed bugs and these are not seen. i do not have an allergic reaction because i can sleep in other beds with no problem.
i live in puerto vallarta mexico and don’t have access to some products mentioned. it is NOT an allergic reaction because i have slept in other beds with no problem. i have no inner springs as the mattress sits on wooden planks over an iron base. they are also NOT bed bugs because you can see bed bugs. they are also NOT noseeums or chiggers because we don’t have them here.

What kind of bugs are in my bed?! And how on earth do I get rid of them?

Posted by admin on November 13th, 2009

Plz help! I have found bugs in my bed (so far, only on the sheet), but I have no clue what kind. So far, I have only seen them on the sheets. They jump 1/2 cm when poked lightly. They are black (or a VERY dark brown). I sometimes get itchy bites that last for a while (no particular area, it seems randomized), but there is no bullseye pattern to the bite (and it is just ITCHY, no pain). But they’re not just in the bed – in clothing too, and I even saw one on my budgie!!! I looked up mites, bed bugs and fleas, but nothing fits the description. What kind of bugs are they? And how on earth can I get rid of them?

what to do about bed bug eggs!!?

Posted by admin on September 15th, 2009

We have a bed bug problem in our apartment!
I’ve only seen two (live) bed bugs, but the gross part is their tiny, white sand-like eggs are all over my bed frame. The eggs are like wedged in-between the wood where I can’t get to them!
How do we get rid of this problem? The only way I can scrape out the eggs is to literally break my bed frame in half! We’re trying to spray things inside the crack; I tried Febreeze, will that kill the eggs?
Please please help us, we’ve never had bed bugs ever before!
I’m totally freaking out about the idea of sleeping on top of a whole community of disgusting little parasites, HELP!

I can’t afford to throw away my bed!
Will Lysol kill them?
Also can’t afford exterminator; omg is this situation worse than fleas??

Could it be bed bugs or what?

Posted by admin on August 25th, 2009

This morning and yesterday my son woke up with what appear to be insect bites. They itch and are red; one was puffy after he scratched it. He is the only one in the house getting these.

So I took the blankets and sheets off his bed and inspected the bedding, mattress, floor and baseboards around the area. I did find one small insect–very small and not like the pictures I’ve seen of bed bugs. It was maybe 1/8 inch long, elongated and brown in color. That was all I could find. I didn’t see any blood or rusty stains on the sheets.

Ugh. I’m almost vomiting here at the thought that there might be bed bugs or something. To my questions:

Can bed bugs be passed by casual contact? We haven’t been anywhere overnight or had any company. My son did get a used stuffed animal that he took to bed with him! (crap) That was a couple weeks ago. Can he pick them up from the kids at school?

If it was bed bugs, wouldn’t I find them on the mattress or sheets or somewhere around the bed? Like I said, it was just that one and it didn’t appear to be a bed bug.

Something is obviously biting him at night. What else could it be, if not bed bugs? What else should I look for for signs of anything?

So I’m going to wash his bedding and vacuum the room really good. What else should I do? Take him to the doctor? Call an exterminator?

Oh, I seriously have the heebie jeebies! :) Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.
No chickens. We do have a cat that’s strictly an indoor cat. We’ve had him for years and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have fleas, but it’s something to check into. Thanks a lot. I made a doctor’s appointment for tomorrow.

Are bed bugs attacking everyone these days?

Posted by admin on August 21st, 2009

We had a problem with bedbugs last summer, and I thought I got rid of them – after a major cleaning, fumagating, linnen and pillow bagging, covering mattresses with vinyl, etc.

They came back. I’m not the best housekeeper in the world, but we have other bug problem. Our cats and dogs have no fleas. I know these things are bedbugs – I took a close look with a magnifying glass and compared with pictures of the darn things in books.

Will an exterminator get rid of them for good? Any advice, commiseration, war stories will be appreciated!
That’s NO other bug problem.

Have you ever dealt with bed bugs?

Posted by admin on August 18th, 2009

I think I may have bed bugs in my house. Initially, I thought they were fleas, but the bites seem to mostly come at night. I can’t find any physical evidence of having fleas or bed bugs (as far as stains on the furniture, mattress, etc.), and I haven’t seen EITHER of these bugs to prove they’ve actually infested my home. I only have the bites.

I’m hoping to find a non-toxic solution, if possible. Any advice is much appreciated, though.

Thanks in advance!
