How much does it cost to get rid of bed bugs?

Posted by admin on May 21st, 2010

My friend got bedbugs on a used sofa he bought. I’m going to be helping him get rid of them, but I am curious as to cost for an exterminator. If anyone out there has had this unfortunate experience and has some advice, it would be most appreciated.

Apartment infested with bed bugs, what do i do?

Posted by admin on April 19th, 2010

i just noticed them a month ago. i live in a one bedroom apartment with my small pomeranian. They have infested the couch and bed, which are the main places i have seen them. I told my apartment manager and at first they said they would take care of the problem. Now they are saying if i want them out, i have to pay for it. I haven’t gotten any new furniture and honestly i dont know where they came from. they are driving me crazy because they are biting me and my dog. I can’t even bear to sit on the couch, but i can’t stop the dog from doing so. I put mattress covers on my bed and they seem to be helping in my room, but the living room is another story. I dont have the money for an exterminator, plus i only have 2 months on my lease. I have already found another place, and i know i have to take special precautions when moving.
I just don’t have the funds to pay for two places at the same time if i move. last night, i got so fed up wit them i went to my parents. i washed the dog thoroughly and dried him on high heat with a blow dryer. I washed and dried my clothes and immediately threw them and the dog in the car and ran for cover to my parents. I read articles on how not to take them with you, and they say you need to wash and dry your clothes and other items. Anything above 113F will kill them. I haven’t been able to sleep because i know they are just waiting for me. i average about 3 hours of sleep a night, and i am seriously abusing coffee. Anyways if you guys were in my situation , what would you seriously do? Give me a step by step procedure. I cant stand these things at all. they are driving me crazy, i need help
not to mention i cant even spend time with the dog because i know she has been sitting on the couch for hours accumulating them. she wants to sleep with me , but i am afraid she willl bring them in my bed again. she scratches at the door and i feel really bad. i can’t wash her everyday b4 bed..ya know!

How can you get rid of bed bugs without an exterminator?

Posted by admin on April 14th, 2010

With a large 2 family house and many things like books, clothes, wall hangings and rugs, what the exterminator wants would be like moving. Is there a way, natural or with pesticides to do it yourself without the hassle? The infestation, after close scrutiny seems to be confined to one bedroom on the first floor and one on the second. Mattresses are being replaced, clothes washed, things placed in the sun, alcohol sprayed where needed. Help, anyone!

How do I prevent bed bugs?

Posted by admin on April 6th, 2010

I have a friend coming to visit me from NY next month and a few weeks ago they got bed bugs in their apartment. Even though they have been treating properly, thrown away their beds & other items, & had an exterminator come in several times, I have read that it can take up to 4 months for all of the eggs to die.

What are the chances that she could be carrying eggs on her?

Is there anything I can do ahead of time to assure that if she does carry eggs with her they die and do not hatch? A bug bomb ahead of time?

Thanks!

Bed bugs in the couch?

Posted by admin on March 25th, 2010

What can you do to kill bedbugs that hide in your couch? Apart from throwing the couch out or calling an exterminator? It’s just this one couch that has them too. I’ve just moved into this place and the only thing that the bugs can get into is this one couch since everything else is leather/wood and I have no bed.
I’ve use a flea and tick spray on them and it’s worked, but it seems like the bugs are coming OUT of the couch. Also, when do these bugs start to reproduce/lay eggs and how fast do they grow up to become that old?

Renter will only spray once for bed bugs?!?

Posted by admin on March 23rd, 2010

We never had these stupid bugs until we moved here. We had an old broken fire detector we turned in to her to replace, but we found what seemed to look like eggs and dead bugs. We didn’t know what it was, and we still haven’t received a new fire alarm.. She’s not having the exterminator come in until tomorrow and we told her we’ve been researching and we think its bed bugs and she only told us she’d spray once and then proceeded to tell us that they only come from beds and sofas.. she seriously needs to do research. We pay over 0 in rent.. Is there anything we can do? Do we have any rights?
Lol my bad then.. I HAVE been getting bit. No need to be a smartass.. Just wondering what my options are..

They have an exterminator coming next week, but from what I’ve read, it’s almost impossible to get rid of bed bugs, and many government agencies recommend that you throw away all your furniture.

How do you get rid of bed bugs?

Posted by admin on March 11th, 2010

We have had an exterminator at our house 3 times now and I am still being bit. My mother-in-law is convinced that they are only upstairs because the exterminator told her that they wouldn’t travel down stairs. Most of the time my welts appear when I’m sitting on furniture in the living room. How do you get rid of them? Obviously, extermination is not the answer. I’m about ready to buy some boric acid and put around my self in the bed. Please help!

How would you feel if you had bed bugs and the apartment manager was doing a shoddy job on getting rid of them

Posted by admin on March 2nd, 2010

And the little bugs were spreading to other apartments. The exterminator was spraying one apartment at a time with a week in-between.
There are people who could have a violent reaction–very few, but there are–and they could go into anaphylactic shock and possible die from a reaction. (There are a lot of handicapped and elderly people where I live).

Do bug bombs…(Help help help?)?

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010

…really work?

Hey everyone.

Unfortunately, I’ve got a bed bug problem. The weird thing? They’re not hiding in my mattress. My guess is they’re hiding behind a loose molding in my room. Pathetically, I tried RAID. Of all things. Raid. Stupid ol’ raid. Thats right. It didn’t work. Now, all of my bedding is going in the washer/dryer, so that’s been taken care of. I know they can be INSIDE the mattress as well, because I don’t want to take any chances, I am going to get an encasement for my mattress very, very soon. But because the raid did not work, I want to try a bug bomb first, before I call the exterminator; if needed. Do bug bombs work? how do I use it? are there any other alternative ways on getting rid of bed bugs, before I call the exterminator? And I hear there is a type of lotion that kills bed bugs, what you do is put it on your body like a regular moistrizer, and if the bedbugs try to bite you, it will die from the moistrizer. Is it true? Also, how much would it be to call an exterminator? Thanks so much for the help!
Mark, I think you have fleas.

Bed Bugs: Am I paying for an exterminator I don’t need?

Posted by admin on February 8th, 2010

We have a bed bug issue. When I found out several days ago I was totally disgusted and could hardly believe it happened to me!

I had noticed some bites on my son, a couple on my daughter, I’d get a few at night too, but my husband had none. At first I thought it was spiders because when we bought our house a year ago there were a lot of spiders and we ended up bombing the house to get rid of all of them.

But I saw one bed bug on my son’s bed in the early AM when I was getting him up for school. I left the lights dim while I was waking him so the nasty critter on the headboard had not hidden himself yet. I killed the bug and went on the internet where I was easily able to identify it as a bed bug. My husband and I stripped the kids beds and took the mattresses off (just for the record I change the sheets weekly). My kids have wooden beds. In the spaces between the wood and where the screws were on the beds we found them on my sons bed, it was disgusting. My daughters bed didn’t seem to have any but I did find a dead on on the floor under her bed (the exterminator said he saw egg sacks in the cracks of her bed). Our bed had three adults visible on the bottom, which I killed.

We called three exterminators and had them come out and give quotes. One said they would come out with a pesticide gas in three applications and charge us 0 (local company), another said they would use a freezing method with one application and charge us 0 (terminx), and the final one said they would use a steaming method with one application and charge us 00 (orkin). We decided to go with Orkin because the steam seemed like the best method and he seemed pretty confident he could kill them all with one application.

My husband and I were freaked so we took the kids mattress outside and put them in the garage, we also took apart their wooden beds (my husband took it apart and I steamed the bed and any bugs as he was doing it) then we wood the bed frames outside as well.

Our bed is still in our room but we haven’t slept on it. Our couch had no traces of bugs according to the exterminators so we left it in the living room. The used furniture we had in our family room we threw out just in case.

Tuesday & Wednesday night (we discovered them Tuesday morning), we bought an air mattress and slept in the family room (which is on the opposite side of the house as the bedrooms). Wednesday night something bit my ankle (only me). We moved our air mattress to the kitchen and slept there Thursday night. I woke up Thursday morning and something had bit my upper arm (only me). This whole time I had been emptying the bedrooms (without any help might I add since my husband had to work and my kids are too young to be of any help) and the exterminator couldn’t come until Monday. So I told my husband I couldn’t stand being here until they were gone so Friday I took the kids and went to a hotel where we had a good nights sleep. Then last night we stayed at my husbands parents house (don’t worry we were very careful not to bring anything with us).

Now I have been preparing for our extermination appointment on Monday this whole time which involves completely emptying the bedrooms of everything except the furniture. I have to rewash all the clothes that were in the dressers. Put all the kids toys and our possessions in plastic bags and take it out of the room until the treatment is done.

But here is my concern. I haven’t found any evidence of them being anywhere except in the beds (with exception of my son’s room I think they may have been in the guitar leaning up against his bed so i threw it out). I’ve inspected their toys, books, clothes as I’m throwing everything in bags and there is no evidence. There is no brown markings on any walls or baseboards.

I’m just worried I’m paying 00 for an extermination that I might not need. From cleaning the bedrooms it seems that as long as we either buy new mattress or put bed bug protection covers on the mattress they will be fine. I’ve already bought the kids new metal bed frames. But what makes me think we still need the extermination is the fact that I was bitten twice during the night in different rooms of the house. I know something bit me those two nights because I am allergic to bits from mostly anything, I had a white raised welt in the morning.

Anyone with experience with bed bugs please give me your opinion on this.

How many times a week should you wash/re-wash clothes/linens if you have bed bugs and an exterminator?

Posted by admin on December 24th, 2009

We found out we had bed bugs pretty quickly. We got an exterminator and he will come every 2 weeks a total of 3 more times. In the meantime, I have washed linens, clothes, etc. in hot water and bleach or ammonia and in hot dry. We’ve been fine up until this morning when I woke up with a huge bite on my arm. I am going to wash the linens on the futon (we moved into the LR) and the clothes that are sitting out, but should I be washing my clothes and stuff every 3 days? I know I am vacuuming a lot. anyone have any ideas?

Is there any OFFICIAL way to get rid of these bugs? Besides just moving my family outside in a cardboard box, and burning the house to the ground?? About 3 months ago, I used Thwart bed bug spray, it seemed to work, didnt have any bed bugs for the 3 months. Now theyre back! Mainly in my sons bed, and they LOVE him unfortunetly. I used the rest of the spray that I had. I went to look online for the website where the spray was bought, no website. My aunt called the 1-800 number…its disconnected. I just want to know if anyone has used any good bug sprays for them. Im not that rich to afford an exterminator, they just keep comming back! Help!
Oh yeah, I’ll just let my family sleep on the floor…thats stupid, you gonna buy me a new matress?

Bed bugs and heat… will it get rid of them?

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009

Alright, as many of us are aware, in the past few years, bed bugs have been on the rise in epidemic proportions in America. Unfortunately for me, I have them. Yeah, it’s gross.
I’m sure it’s bed bugs, I’ve done tons of research, and seen/killed them on my bed.
On the internet, websites suggest to keep the area clean and free of clutter, but that wont help me because my area is absolutely spotless. I barely have furniture! And I am the living anti-clutter. Anyways…

The websites say that the University of Florida have come up with the simple idea of using a controlled heat evironment containing the affected furniture.
But that got me to thinking. Experts also say that putting your clothes in the dryer will give off enough heat to kill the bugs.
So… why not just crank up the heat in the house?

And I don’t mean just turn on the heat.
Monday is going to be 100 degrees here. What if I turned the A/C off and turned the heat on? All the way, with the fan on, so it will continue to blow even after the thermostat reaches 100 degrees. I’m throwing my bed away, too. Obviously, this poses some kind of risk, right? I guess I can unplug almost everything, and take out all of the aresol cans and things of melty nature. Is this really a bad idea or am I really thinking the right way? I have no idea if I’m crazy due to just wanting to get rid of them so badly and avoiding the rental office and exterminator drama that will ensue at my apartment, or if this can actually work and I’m somewhat smart. =)

So I guess to sum up my questions, I want to know if you guys think it will work, and if you guys think it’s totally safe or unsafe.

Thanks everyone.
Tony, if you had read what I wrote, you would have found that I am throwing away my whole bed. And what do you even mean by, "you cant get rid of bed bugs". Simply throwing the bed away isn’t going to get rid of them, I don’t know what YOU think. But, anyhow, what I wrote really wasn’t that long, and if it seems long to you, then you’re not the kind of person I want even answering my question anyway.
Steven, that is kind of what I feared. You’re right… the air might be unbearable, but the actual walls and furniture and such probably wont get that hot. …. =/

Could it be bed bugs or what?

Posted by admin on August 25th, 2009

This morning and yesterday my son woke up with what appear to be insect bites. They itch and are red; one was puffy after he scratched it. He is the only one in the house getting these.

So I took the blankets and sheets off his bed and inspected the bedding, mattress, floor and baseboards around the area. I did find one small insect–very small and not like the pictures I’ve seen of bed bugs. It was maybe 1/8 inch long, elongated and brown in color. That was all I could find. I didn’t see any blood or rusty stains on the sheets.

Ugh. I’m almost vomiting here at the thought that there might be bed bugs or something. To my questions:

Can bed bugs be passed by casual contact? We haven’t been anywhere overnight or had any company. My son did get a used stuffed animal that he took to bed with him! (crap) That was a couple weeks ago. Can he pick them up from the kids at school?

If it was bed bugs, wouldn’t I find them on the mattress or sheets or somewhere around the bed? Like I said, it was just that one and it didn’t appear to be a bed bug.

Something is obviously biting him at night. What else could it be, if not bed bugs? What else should I look for for signs of anything?

So I’m going to wash his bedding and vacuum the room really good. What else should I do? Take him to the doctor? Call an exterminator?

Oh, I seriously have the heebie jeebies! :) Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.
No chickens. We do have a cat that’s strictly an indoor cat. We’ve had him for years and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have fleas, but it’s something to check into. Thanks a lot. I made a doctor’s appointment for tomorrow.

Are bed bugs attacking everyone these days?

Posted by admin on August 21st, 2009

We had a problem with bedbugs last summer, and I thought I got rid of them – after a major cleaning, fumagating, linnen and pillow bagging, covering mattresses with vinyl, etc.

They came back. I’m not the best housekeeper in the world, but we have other bug problem. Our cats and dogs have no fleas. I know these things are bedbugs – I took a close look with a magnifying glass and compared with pictures of the darn things in books.

Will an exterminator get rid of them for good? Any advice, commiseration, war stories will be appreciated!
That’s NO other bug problem.

Help! I think I have bed bugs!?

Help! I think I have bed bugs!?
Within the past week, I’ve been getting strange bug bites. I looked up pictures of bug bites online today and some of the bed bug ones are exactly like what I have.
So now what do I do? Wash everything? Call an exterminator? I read on one website that I shouldn’t try to sleep somewhere else because they may follow me (I live alone) because I’m their source of food (EW!).
I went out of town last weekend (about 10 days ago) and took my pillow to the hotel. Could I have brought them back with me in my pillow and gotten bit this fast?

Help, I don’t know what to do, I don’t have a lot of money for an exterminator or new mattress (and I’ve heard the new mattress may not even help). And I can’t sleep cause I feel like bugs are crawling all over me! Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

bed bug spray question?

Posted by admin on August 1st, 2009

the exterminator just came and he said what he sprayed had 3 chemicals in it and one of them is supposed to bring the bed bug out right away if I have them.
well i have not seen any. does that mean I don’t have them? I am sure I was about 10 of them in 22 days.
How toxic is that thing anyways if anyone knows what I am talking about?
Should I keep on worrying? I feel ashamed to bring people over to my new place.
thanks
he actually did not. He told me it was safe to stay in the place because he is been doing it his whole life and nothing happen to him. I did not believe it so I made sure I opened my windows but thank God 1 hour after I had to go to school and did not sleep in.

Are we killing the bed bugs?

Posted by admin on July 31st, 2009

We recently found out that we have bed bugs, we thought they were ticks from the woods in our backyard. Anyway we bagged all material items washed what is needed for now, broke all bedrooms down, sprayed all hard surfaces(table joints, and chairs, etc.), everyday we spray baseboards, matresses, and carpet with 91% isopropyl alcohol. When I say spray, we are useing a continuous sprayer which puts out a continuous heavy stream. So we are actually saturating everything in alcohol. we have set up camp in our living room( its just nasty to sleep w/them) I need to know are we affecting them at all or just wasting time and money. By the way we cannot afford for the exterminator to do it, he said it was going to start at 0. So for you pros out there are we getting the job done?
