This is how I am feeding all the bed bug cultures in the lab. using freshly drew rabbit blood.
Hemotek is the electronic device to keep warm the blood(37oC) so that the bed bugs could detect the heat for feeding.
Each reservoir contains 3mL of bloods. As a single female C. lectularius(common bed bug) ingestion about 0.006mL, up to 500 individuals could be fed.
The big jar needed around 10mL in total, so that the population should be 1,000 ~ 1,500 nymphs and adults.
However, if the blood condition is not fresh or contaminated by fungus or bacteria, even pesticide, all the fully fed thousands of bed bugs will die within 24 hour.
According to my experiment, the collected blood should not be kept in the refrigerator more than 2 weeks. Also, complete all feeding within 3 hours is recommended.
If you have any question about the feeding bed bugs, please feel free to leave a comment.
