Bed bug spray advice?

Posted by admin on November 6th, 2010

We had a bed bug problem and want to use a non toxic product to make sure they’re all gone.
Non toxic because we have a small dog.

We were told by a local hardware store owner that Green Blaster Magic was a good product
to get rid of bed bugs.
But when my wife brought the spray home I discovered that the only active ingredient was
Sodium Chloride(salt).
Inactive Ingredients: Natural Enzymes, Surfactants.

Am I correct to believe that this is merely a salt-water solution and that the other ingredients do nothing to kill bed bugs?

Thanks much for all help/advice
Tony

are pesticides used to spray for bed bugs in an office in a basement dangerous to pregnant women?

Posted by admin on November 1st, 2010

yes, ive called my doctor, but she needs to know what kind of pesticides is being sprayed to be able to answer my question.
i’ve tried calling different pest control places, but theyre all closed for the night.

i work in a basement of a building for telemarketing. no windows. they just sprayed before i went to work and didnt tell anyone about it, but word got out somehow so i left because i didnt want to risk being around chemicals unsafe for my unborn baby.

what chemicals would usually be used in this situation? (for bed bugs in an office in a basement)
are they harmful to me? and should i have been informed, as a pregnant worker?

i know i might not be able to get a straight answer due to lack of information on what exact chemical was sprayed, but i was hoping to get some sort of answer in the mean time to settle my mind. thank you.

and ps i asked my boss and he told me to call back in the morning to ask.

please and thank you =)

Bed Bugs? Should I call for professional help?

Posted by admin on October 21st, 2010

I’m hoping someone who has dealt with bed bugs before can help me.

Recently within the last few weeks I received some bug bites. These occurred immediately after returning from a trip to the east coast (Washington DC). The bites are located only on my feet, ankles, and there are one or two on my calf, and a cluster of three on my upper thigh. No bites on my upper body. At first I thought it was fleas. While we were gone we had a friend come by and feed our cat and he has a small dog. The dog used my couch blanket as a bed so I was thinking that could be it. A friend of mine looked at my bites and said, "You have bed bugs," saying this because he himself had them a few years back and had to throw out his mattress. Immediately I started panicing. My bites are in sort of a linear pattern of three, but they’re spread pretty far apart. My boyfriend who shares the same bed has no bites. But I’ve heard its not uncommon for the bugs to have one host or people not having allergic reactions to their bites. The first thing I did was spray our luggage with bed bug spray and put it in the garage. I haven’t gotten any new bites since the first ones, a few weeks ago.

My boyfriend and I turned our mattress and boxspring upside down and searched for clues but couldn’t find any. I bought vinyl mattress encasements and we’ve sealed up our mattress and boxspring already just in case, our city has a reported high number of bed bug infestations. I’ve been diligently checking the bedding every day and have no other clues (no obvious feces, eggs, or skin) but the other day I did find a blood stain on my pillowcase about the size of a dime. It wasn’t that dark and washed out very easily. I searched the case and pillow but never found a dead bug. I’ve never bled on my pillowcase before, but I have noticed blood in my ear canal within the last week and my boyfriend is prone to nosebleeds from time to time.

So, I’m pretty worried. I’ve already thrown all of my clothing and linens in the dryer on high heat and have been vacuuming like a fool. At first this eased my mind but then I saw that stupid stain. I figured if I saw any more definitive clues (like cast skins or blood stains or an actual bed bug) I would call my landlord. Now that I’ve seen a stain I’m still skeptical of whether or not I have enough information to determine a bed bug problem. Our landlords aren’t the friendliest, we rent from private owners, and their maintenance staff is useless, they don’t know what they’re doing and don’t speak much English. We really don’t have extra money to hire an outside exterminator.

Have you dealt with bed bugs in the past? Would you say I have enough evidence that I should call my landlord or wait for more clues? I have photos of all of my bites, as well as the blood stain. I’ve heard the earlier you catch a problem, the easier they are to get rid of, just not sure if I even have a problem (besides paranoia). Thanks!
Thanks! Yep, I’ve done literally hours of research on the web on bed bugs, so I’ve been searching and keeping a sharp eye out for clues where they like to hide, I even took apart my wooden dresser and sprayed the cracks just in case :) I didn’t stay in a hotel, I stayed with my boyfriend’s parents in the basement room (kind of regretting that now) on a sofa bed. I figure if I picked them up during travel it was at the airport. Thanks for the tip on the new clothing, I never would’ve thought to do that and it makes sense. At this rate it seems like within the next ten years everyone will have bed bugs!

What kind of bug is infesting my house?

Posted by admin on October 6th, 2010

I am the only person in my house thats being bitten. I haven’t seen any bugs, but I’ve got bites all over the back of my thigh, the left of my thigh, and my lower back. 3 Other people live in this house and nothing bites them. I sleep in the livingroom, on the couch, and it seems like when i’m sitting at my computer, or sitting on my couch, i’m constantly itching, and later bites seem to appear. I can sometimes feel them on me, but I don’t know if I’m psyching myself out or not, and everytime i check to see if theres a bug, theres nothing there. I’ve tried bug bombing, I’ve tried bed bug sprays, I’ve tried flea bombing/sprays. I can’t seem to find any bugs. Some of the bites get infected and become really painful. I can’t take it anymore, I might have to move out of my apartment due to this. Please let me know if you have an idea of what might be bitting me, and how to get rid of it! Thanks.

Preventing bed bug bites in hotels?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2010

I stay in 3 or 4 star hotels but always seem to get what I assume are bed bug bites – little sores that itch and bleed. on my lower arms and legs. At first I thought maybe my skin was just extra sensitive and I was allergic to some cleaning chemical they maybe were using; but I don’t think that’s right. Wearing long PJs helps a bit but not always, and isn’t practical in the summer. Is there any other way I can prevent this? Maybe a dry powder or spray I can use before bed? Luckily I don’t seem to have carried them back to my own bedroom.
LC, see for example http://litoc.com/articles/new/itchy-and-stinky:-traveling-with-bed-bugs.html;

"there is a ninety percent chance that popular hotel chains, even presidential suites in five-star hotels are prone to bed bugs"

Bug bites!!!!!! HELP!!!! please?

Posted by admin on September 17th, 2010

My mom has been getting bitten in lots of different places by what we think are bed bugs. She’s been bitten where her arm folds when she flexes her arms, her belly button, her sides, etc. We’ve tried a bunch of different bed bug sprays and powders, but she’s still getting bitten! My father MAY be getting bitten, but he hasn’t said anything about it, and my brother used to get bitten but doesn’t as much anymore. I haven’t gotten bitten yet… Anyways, my mom is really distressed by these bed bugs and we don’t know how to get rid of them!

Additional Info: We have three bedrooms, my parents have a walk-in closet, we have an entry room, a living room, and a kitchen and dining room that are all connected with no doors, and a family room, a laundry room, three small bathrooms, and a garage. Also, we have a cockatiel and two mice, if that has anything to do with this mysterious biting thing. Help is appreciated! Thanks!
BTW, we already soaked everything in hot water, vacummed, washed, sprayed, powdered – everything we could think of!!!!!

I am worried about bed bugs after dog sitting for a friend. I slept there and woke up with bites the 2nd day.?

Posted by admin on August 19th, 2010

About a week and half ago I was dog sitting for a friend, on the 2nd day I found a can of bed bug spray. The next morning I woke up with 2 bites. I went home that day. That was a Sunday. By Wednesday I had 3 differnt spots with 3 bites. That night I doused my bed and box springs with alcohol. I found 1 dead bed bug. The next day I bought a mattress cover. I repsrayed everything again including the floor and then covered box springs and mattress sealing any seams with duct tape. I have since then been spraying everything everyday with alcohol including covered bed. The extermintor told me I was probably all set because I sprayed everything and covered bed almost immediatly. I inspected my bed with the help of my roommate and we did not find any eveidence of bed bugs..just the one dead one after I had sprayed. Should I trust him?

If it's black, can it be a bed bug?

Posted by admin on July 29th, 2010

I’ve read that bed bugs are white or tan/brown/dark red in color..

Anyway I just got back from NYC and heard about bed bugs but didn’t bring any spray because I wasn’t staying at a hotel or anything. I don’t know if I’ve been bitten by a bed bug or not, but anyway, I found this bug crawling on me during the next day, probably from the floor where I was laying. It’s completely black and a tiny little thing that was crawling around my carpet. around as thick as a penny and about twice as long as that.

Anyway, I don’t think bed bugs can be black, but could that be what it is? I’m just probably over-worrying myself cause I didn’t bring a spray with me.
When I say the thickness of a penny ‘m talking about on its side, like the bug is only a couple millimeters long not big like a roach.

On that note it could be a tick or a flew because it’s that size but it’s black not red or brown. I don’t know what ticks or fleas look like.

Are there any indoor bug sprays without the harsh chemical smell?

Posted by admin on July 19th, 2010

Are there any home bug spray that don’t have that really strong chemical scent? I’m looking for one that kills ants, roaches, sliverfish, centipedes & all those other nasty bug that can get in my house. I remember my freshmen year in college I had an ant problem in my dorm that the school would do anything about. Ants were getting in my bed, so I took matter into my own hands by spraying Raid all over the room. Even though I opened the window my roommate complained the smell was making her sick. I finished college so I don’t stay in the dorms anymore, but I wanted to know if there is an unscented spray I can use in my house so my family won’t complain.

How do I get rid of bedbugs that have gone beyond the bed?

I was given a matress that was infected with bed bugs, we sprayed the matress and continued to get bitten. we eventually threw out the matress and burned it. Now we have a new matress and have seen more bedbugs, one on the box spring of the mattress(which is also new) and one on the bedroom chair.

Bed bugs, what can I do?

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2010

So I had my old mattress thrown out because of beg bugs, along with my white vinyl covered wood frame because of bed bugs. I heard recently there has been a huge outbreak of them. Once I threw out my stuff vacuumed and took everything out of the room. Now about a month later I notice a bed bug. I don’t see anymore I just saw one. Before my brand new mattress gets infested anyone got any tips of what I can do? I am extremely angry because I thought I got rid of them and then spent about six hundred dollars on a new mattress. Should I spray my mattress and entire room down with some kind of bed bug spray or what? Thanks to everyone that can help
If they feed on dead skin, why did I have bites all on my arms?

Is it safe to spray or do bed bugs treatment at home with a puppy running around?

Posted by admin on June 15th, 2010

Have a 4 month old lab mix at home, and recently found that there are bed bugs in my bed, so was concerned that when I will do any kind of treatment for those bugs, it will definetely go into carpets too (a spray like thing) and since he is just mouthing anything these days, is it safe for him to come across that kind of a thing. I can keep him away while doing the treatment but eventually he will be playing there only.

Who is reponsible for paying for bed bug extermination?

Posted by admin on May 31st, 2010

I live in a 4 bedroom townhouse. We recently found bedbugs in the house which we immediately reported to our landlord. We do not have a written lease with our landlord, just an oral agreement that we will give each other 30 days notice before moving out. The security deposit 00 each. Our landlord is saying that it is our responsibility to pay for the treatment to the house. However, he informed us that 9 months prior to three of the roommates moving in, there was a bed bug problem reported and two spray treatments done to the house. It’s clear that the treatments didn’t eradicate them since most of the bugs were concentrated in the one roommates room that was living in the residence when the first outbreak occurred. Who would be responsible to pay for the treatment? Also, 3 of the roommates had no prior knowledge of the problem before moving in.
1.) He told me about the bed bug issue after I moved it.
2.) There are 4 of us at the house, 3 of us had no prior knowledge that there was an issue one year ago with bed bugs. I have documentation that he paid for the first & second treatment 1 year ago.
3.) The bugs are on every level of the 3 level townhouse.
Correction: The landlord only told the newer roommates about the bed bug issue only now since it’s a problem again.

How bed bug infested do you think i am?

Posted by admin on May 27th, 2010

so a few days ago i had 3 bites on my arm, the first bites i EVER noticed. i saw no signs of bugs. last night me and my mom stripped my bed (cause we’re really OCD) and found 5 baby bed bugs and one adult, which freaked us out, cause i have only been bit the one time. today we threw everything on my bed in the dryer for an hour, vacuum my bed and emptying the vacuum, and are spraying everything with this bed bug spray we bought at some bed bug store. do you think this will be enough to kill the eggs- as we think there must only have been the pregnant mom and then she laid eggs and thats why we found so many babies at one time cause they just hatched?.. idk, what do you think- were freaking out!

Does homeowner's insurance typically cover spraying for bed bugs?

Posted by admin on May 17th, 2010

My landlady is reluctant to pay for this, even though the law is very clear that it’s her responsibility. (But the fines for violators are too low to motivate her.) I’m hoping she’ll be more willing if she knows she can recoup her costs by filing an insurance claim. Any ideas on other ways she can cover her costs (gov’t programs, etc.) are much appreciated. At this point taking her to court is not an option I’m willing to consider. Thanks!
